If you’re looking for a few cost-saving tips on how to score amazing headshots for little to no costs keep reading:

1. Have a friend or a photography student to take your photo: Instead of hiring a professional photographer who specializes in theatrical headshots, hire your friend or a student photographer. You have a few options when it comes to this: you could do a trade and offer them a service in return or, for a student, you could let them know that it’s OK for them to use your photos in their portfolio.

2. Save yourself money! Do your own hair and makeup: Professional hairstylists and makeup artists are amazing but are usually expensive. A great way to cut the costs associated with your headshot shoot is by jumping on Youtube and learning how to do your own hair and makeup. Here’s the thing to remember: make sure that your hair and makeup look simple and natural. You don’t need to be an expert but you should know enough about hair and makeup in general that anyone looking at your photo can’t tell it wasn’t done by a professional. If you’re new to hair and makeup, watch a few Youtube tutorials such as this one or this one.

3. Use natural lighting: An alternative to renting out a studio or using expensive lighting equipment is to take your headshots outside during the day. You could also take them inside, near a large window with LOTS of natural light. Do a few test shots in both settings to get a feel for what will work best for your clothing choices, look, brand, etc.

4. Edit your own dang photos: Once you receive your headshots back (or finish taking them), you will want to make sure that any small imperfections, blemishes, lines, wrinkles, smudges, or other issues are addressed. If you already have photo editing software, go you! If not, there are websites that offer free trials for their photo editing software (like Adobe Creative Suite). I have personally used Adobe Creative Suite and LOVE it. It definitely takes some getting use to but it’s a worthy investment if you want your photos to look top notch.

5. Bring or use wardrobe from your own friggin closet: Another reason why many actors spend so much money on headshots is because they feel pressured to buy new wardrobe for the shoot. DON’T. Use items in your closet that are flattering, comfy, and align with these guidelines. If you need more help, check out this video or this one.
